The Time Has Come

After ironing out the details of the novella I've pondered and planned for the last few weeks, I have just arrived to the point of actually writing it. Whew! I know for me, I'm the hardest one to work with when it comes to writing. I'll spend hours arguing back and forth on certain details, characters, settings what have you until one of two things happens: I become frustrated to the point of working on another project, or I'll have to just turn the switch off and just do what I do and see what happens afterward.

I'm sure to stump or confound myself down the road, but I believe I'm reaching the point of just writing like I work: just do it, it'll turn out however it turns out. Now I still adhere to my usual regimented structure of doing things, but I'll only write like walking a path: wherever it takes me, or rather, where I write it to take me.

I hope others can relate to this quandry, because honestly, I'm sick of myself. So now that I've reconciled with myself over my own nit-picking and trying to fine tune or polish things, I feel fit for duty to continue forward.

Until next time, get to know yourself better, otherwise you'll make yourself crazy.

  1. Ha! "Get to know yourself better, otherwise you'll make yourself crazy."

    That's pretty good advice. :)

I'm a total pantser most of the time. I like to meander as I write, but I usually know where I'm going, so I don't get too lost. I love discovery writing and researching as I go. I uncover the most interesting facts that way.

Start writing and see where it leads.

  2. Glad you liked it. I know where I'm going writing, but getting there is something else. I'm just going to do that, write and see where I go.

  3. Amen... I feel your pain.

I can write the first draft fairly easy, but struggle to make my work shine and flow. I am working on my 5th rewrite and foresee at least 3 more a head of me… after each revision I see things I can improve on, and therefore compelled to do another rewrite.

Someday I’ll finish a rewrite and glory in the fact I can’t improve upon it.

  4. Uh, Jeff, I really hate to be the 'flat tire on the bus of your day', but I'm not sure that day will ever come. I mean the one where we will look at our writing and not find a word, a snippet of dialogue, a sentence that we don't itch to tweak. Sorry...;) It's the nature of the beast.
Julius....great post. Just do it! I know you....we're too alike for comfort. I get sick of myself, too. That's when I know it's time to write. Ha! And I want details, man, details! Is this the same short story we discussed in May?
