Plans of Something New

After spending the last several days reviewing some of my favorite Lovecraft stories, I believe I know the route I want to take with my sci-fi/horror. Planning has taking several directions, but now I know which direction I am going! And honestly, the last confirmation of it took place about an hour ago, while trying to do zumba with my wife. I am not good at it, so that's that. My biggest inspiration for this new piece was my favorite short story by Lovecraft, At the Mountains of Madness. Mine isn't going to be as dark though. The basic premise is somewhat similar with a little fantasy mixed in: Atlantis is discovered beneath the mountains and ice of Antarctica and its inhabitants (ancient, yet advanced), human beings from protohistory are found to be the guardians of ancient creatures and horrors of myth and legend.

I am most anxious to begin writing, though I must remain patient and polish my ideas before committing. I hate to re-edit while writing because I become my own worst enemy. While I'll still be maintaining my untitled WIP, I will flip-flop from one to the other to keep the ideas fresh and the epiphanies that much more august.

So stay tuned in for more, particularly you fans of the genre! Happy writings!

  1. Sounds like a really cool premise.

If you don't like to edit as you go, you probably would benefit from taking the time to do a thorough outline. Work out your ideas before you commit time to the page. Good luck. I can only work on one project at at time. I get a little obsessive and dig in deep when I'm in first draft mode.

  2. Thanks, I was a little nervous about it at first, but I am committed to it. When I edit as I go it takes even longer to complete, so I've been outlining it first. When I do start, I'll be going back and forth between this and the novel, to keep ideas fresh and the frustration to a minimum.

  3. I like the idea… good luck.
I never outline a thing. If the story is meant to be it will show me the way… if not, it will disappear.

  4. I usually don't outline, but I felt compelled to do so on this one.

  5. Sounds like a cool premise. My wife got Zumba for our Wii; it definitly gets your heart rate up, whether or not you've got the moves down.

  6. I can't dance, at all. My wife thinks I look like a river dancer.

  7. Isn't it exciting when you get a new idea rushing into your head? I had the same experience last week and I frantically wrote about twenty pages of notes long-hand in my blank book and put it aside. Why? Because I still need to finish editing my first book in the series (from whence all the others come) and I have another project with priority. I agree, I rarely outline, but sometimes it helps when I'm trying to write a synopsis. Also, while I write pretty cleanly, many authors suggest just getting it all down, then going back to edit. I struggle with that and it sounds like you do too. As for Zumba--at least you try! Take care and I'll get back to blogging in the next couple of days, promise.

  8. New ideas are great! Unfortunately, I am currently tethered to this keyboard, typing the endless stream of my 80k+ words for 'Claiming The Prize......Oy! I'm taking a break to stop by and see what you all are up to.....
Zumba?? I have an image in my mind....
I'm thinking of joining up with Keystone Crossfit. I've heard it is a very intense fitness program, and you know that intense and I go hand in hand. It may kill me, so if you never hear from Nadja again, you'll know why. Ha!
Talk to you soon..... ~ Nadja

  9. Intense I can handle, but dance moves are not my thing. I sympathize with the typing, but you get used to it after a while.
